Republicans and Democrats in the House passed a bill on Wednesday afternoon to partially fund the government for the rest of the fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30, following months of turmoil and blockades led by conservative Republicans seeking severe cuts to federal spending.
The measure funds about 30 percent of the federal government, including the Departments of Justice, Transportation, Energy, Agriculture, Commerce, Interior, Veterans Affairs, Housing and Urban Development, and the Environmental Protection Agency, Food and Drug Administration and crucial government research functions.
The bill, which required the backing of two-thirds of the chamber to advance, passed in a 339 to 85 vote with 132 Republicans joining nearly all Democrats in support. The Senate is expected to pass the bill before Saturday, when a partial government shutdown would be triggered.
Congress has passed four stopgap spending bills since Sept. 30.
