Pete Carroll’s historic run as head coach in Seattle is over.
Carroll will no longer be the Seahawks‘ head coach, the team announced Wednesday. However, Carroll will remain in the organization in a different role.
Carroll joined the Seahawks in 2010, helping them become Super Bowl contenders within a few seasons. He led them to their first Super Bowl title in 2013, winning Super Bowl XLVIII over the Broncos 43-8. The Seahawks repeated as NFC champs a year later, but fell to the Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX as Carroll’s controversial decision to pass the ball from the 1-yard line in the final minute played a hand in their 28-24 loss.
The Seahawks reached the postseason 10 times in Carroll’s 14 years at the helm, going 137-89-1 during that span. After reaching the playoffs in 2022, the Seahawks weren’t able to make it in 2023 despite their 9-8 record.
Former Seahawks defensive coordinator and current Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn is considered to be a strong candidate for the role, according to NFL Media.
Carroll, 72, was the game’s oldest active head coach.
